This is one of the most complex, hermetic and extraordinary work made by Mariko Mori: the name Kumano belongs to both a videoinstallation (Alaya) and a print, that synthetizes the themes of the video. In Italy Kumano has been shown @ the Fondazione Prada, Milan ( www.fondazioneprada.org ),where Mori projected an installation (the Garden of Purification) in which the visitor was supposed to follow a course to get to Kumano (Alaya). This video, as its glassprint, is related to the Dream Temple and rapresent an initiation to the purification. The artist appears as a shintoist priestess, she invites the spectator to follow her into a forest land that looks enchanted and pure. Then the artist performes a buddhist priestess, praying on the bottom of the waterfalls.The Dream Temple, virtual as sacred, is shown in the video through a 3dimensional rendering. After this sequence thereis another one, no more located in the forest, where the "Mirror of the Water"'s Mariko Mori fluctuates in a white and aseptic space, with artificial atoms, and fluo bubbles, celebrating the Tea Ceremony, like in an antigravitational emptiness.The artist declared that her intention was to transcend the space and the time dimensions.
